Psychedelica als medicijn (Psychedelics as medicine)

Joost Breeksema, the president of OPEN, opened this lecture with an overview of recent and historical research into the therapeutic applications of psychedelics. After that, Maarten Belgers, a physician specialized in addiction, talked about ibogaine and the research he is starting in collaboration with the Radboud University in Nijmegen.
Psilocybin in the treatment of end-of-life anxiety

Dr. Charles Grob, professor in Psychiatry & Biobehavioral Sciences at UCLA school of medicine, Los Angeles (USA), gave a lecture on his research into psilocybin, the active ingredient in ‘magic mushrooms’. The main focus of the lecture was his investigation into the safety and efficacy of psilocybin as a therapeutic aid in the treatment of severe anxiety in adult patients with advanced-stage cancer. He also talked about his previous research into MDMA and ayahuasca.

At 3 December 2012, in collaboration with Studiekring Vrij Onderzoek, OPEN organized its first lecture in Belgium. Neuroscientist Dr. Hylke Vervaeke gave a similar lecture as the lectures organized at multiple universities throughout the Netherlands in 2010: an overview of current research into psychedelics, clinical trials in health care, and the mechanism of action of psychedelic substances in the brain.

In 2010, at different universities throughout the Netherlands, OPEN organized the lecture ‘(How) Do Psychedelics Work?’. Neuroscientists Dr. Ruud Kortekaas and Dr. Hylke Vervaeke gave an overview of current research into psychedelics, clinical trials in health care, and the the mechanism of action of psychedelic substances in the brain.

Afkicken met Iboga
University of Amsterdam – 19 February 2009
At Thursday 19 February 2009 OPEN organized an informative meeting about Iboga and ibogaïne at the University of Amsterdam. The documentary ‘Ibogaine – Rite of Passage’ was shown, which was followed by a lecture of the director Ben de Loenen. After this, several experts debated the use of ibogaine in the treatment of addiction.

LSD & MDMA as therapeutic tools

Our second lecture was organized in collaboration with the psychology department of the University of Amsterdam. Valerie Mojeiko of The Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) talked about the therapeutic potential of both LSD and MDMA.
Ayahuasca & Anthropology: Amazonian shamanism & western science

Our first lecture was organized in cooperation with the anthropology faculty of the University of Amsterdam. Arno Adelaars introduced ayahuasca to those unfamiliar with the substance, after which Jeremy Narby filled the rest of the time. He spoke about ayahuasca and his experiences with the Ashaninca in the Peruvian Amazon.
